Kurt Zouma to be assessed before Lyon trip after twisting ankle in Brentford defeat - Zouma Out
Kurt Zouma to be assessed before Lyon trip after twisting ankle in Brentford defeat

David Moyes has revealed Kurt Zouma will be assessed by West Ham's medical team after twisting his ankle during the first half of his side's 2-0 defeat by Brentford.

Zouma, 27, had to be replaced by Issa Diop in the 29th minute at the Brentford Community Stadium after sustaining the knock.

“Kurt's twisted his ankle and we don't know how bad it is,” said Moyes.

“We'll get him checked but I hadn't had a chance to speak to the medical team yet. Coming off is not a good sign so hopefully it's not too bad.”

Moyes will be hoping the former Chelsea defender can shake off the injury before the second leg of West Ham's crucial quarter-final tie against Lyon.

West Ham travel to France with the scores level after Jarrod Bowen and Tanguy Ndombele netted for their respective sides at the London Stadium on Thursday.

Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney scored for Brentford in the second half after Zouma had been replaced.

Zouma's fellow central defender Craig Dawson received a knock to the face but was able to play the full 90 minutes.

“We thought he broke his nose on Thursday,” added Moyes.

“I think in the first minute he got caught on the nose so he would've been in real pain throughout the game with it.”

Bad challenge as well, and the guy wasn't carded for it.

I mentioned on the match thread, I'm sick of our players getting constantly fouled by opposition with little or not protection from referees, when they seem only too happy to officiate more strictly the other way. I'm probably still annoyed about Thursday on that front as well.

Not that Zouma would have made a difference yesterday, probably, but to have a bad challenge that forced him off injured go unpunished is a kick in the teeth.

Zouma wouldn't have done what Diop did for the first, so probably would've made a difference.

Anyway he'll be fine, it was as blatant a 'saving himself' substitution as I've ever seen, similar to Antonio and Cresswell before Sevilla. Been instructed by the coaching staff to not take any chances.

I think the issue is our team is full of model professionals so we dont complain like other teams to do. So its easy for ref not to give card! We need to be nastier.

Yup good point- I'd forgotten that. Just jogging over to the ball and conceding the throw. Compounded by Cresswell having a lapse in concentration as well (although was he covering for Diop?)

He was fouled with a scissor tackle, which can really fuck up the victim’s ankle, just like McCarthy on Payet, who suffered ligament damage. A blatant yellow card, perhaps even orange, if you know what I mean.

It didn’t look quite as bad as Payet’s ankle yesterday, but it only takes an instant of over stretch of the ankle to cause bad damage, so fingers crossed he’s back soon, if not on Thursday.

As much as I hate when teams do this, big dawg is right. We need to be a lot more savvy like other teams.

True. Look at the difference between us and Sevilla or Lyon. Absolute cynical, dirty, sly tactics in every aspect of the game. Diving, feigning injury, niggly fouls, timewasting, stopping the game by hook or by crook when we were pressuring them. Almost every time we were in a good position against Lyon someone went down rolling around until the ref stopped the game. Worst thing is that the dark arts work and the official fall for them or let things go time and again.

It's a fucking horrible way to play the game, but maybe you need to fight fire with fire sometimes in those cases sometimes.

Fornals occasionally tries to buy a free kick but the problem he has is that he's not very good at doing it. You can't just go down when there's clear distance you and the opposition.

I get really pissed off with how Antonio gets treated. I just cannot believe what the refs let defenders do to him. Every ball he tries to receive he has some big cunt jumping on his back and the refs give a foul to the defender. It's incredible the number of times I think, excellent we've got a good position for a free kick there and then it goes to the opposition!

I'm shocked. A WHU supporter who's actually being positive, not moaning, not complaining, not 'woe is me'?

I'll have a beer with you any time.

Where did you get that from Grasshopper?

Re: Kurt Zouma to be assessed before Lyon trip after twisting ankle in Brentford defeat
Hope Hopper is wrong but my gut feel is he isnt as it did look a nasty roll (assuming thats what it was) so could well need a few weeks to get fully recovered.

Will be Diop and Dawson at Lyon i would guess, Oggy is back in training but you would think he needs some time to get match fit etc, wont surprise me to see him on the bench though?

Not the end of the world, Diop on his day can be pretty good, its his inconsistancy thats his problem, its also on home soil for him the Lyon game, expect he will want to make an impression.

Syd - Yea, Diop could either have the game of his life or be a disaster, and like you say will want to do well in his own country.

That's now 2 dangerous challenges on 2 key players of ours that have injured said players, that have not resulted in bookings.

Except he’s not, and it’s just an ongoing rather unfunny joke.

Doesn’t take a genius to guess that Zouma is out Thursday. Was always the most likely outcome.
